Microsoft 365 Migration FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant migration.

Mailbox Migration

What user settings are retained during mailbox migration?

The following settings are preserved:

  • Folder structure
  • Read/unread status
  • Calendar entries
  • Flags and reminders
  • Notes and contacts
  • Inbox rules
  • Mailbox delegations

Are email signatures migrated?

No, email signatures are not migrated. Users will need to recreate their signatures in the new tenant.

What happens to Teams meeting invites in calendars?

Teams meeting invites cannot be automatically regenerated with new tenant links. The calendar entries are migrated, but the Teams meeting links will still point to the old tenant. Users should create new Teams meetings for future events.

Are calendar updates after migration included?

Updates made to calendar items after migration are skipped during delta passes. For the most accurate calendar, migrate close to the cutover date.

OneDrive Migration

Are file versions migrated?

Only the latest version of each file is transferred. Previous versions are not migrated.

Are deleted items included?

No, items in the Recycle Bin are not included in the migration.

What happens to file permissions?

Internal permissions are retained during migration. However, external sharing links are not regenerated and will need to be manually re-established in the new tenant.

What about shared files and tabs?

Shared tabs reflect the source sharing configuration. Cross-tenant links will require manual re-establishment after migration.

Teams Migration

What Teams content is migrated?

Teams sites transfer with:

  • Owners and members
  • Channels
  • Channel messages
  • Files and documents
  • Default wiki pages

Are 1:1 chats included in Teams migration?

No, 1:1 chats are not included in standard Teams migration. See our article on Direct Messages Migration for options.

Are custom wikis migrated?

Default wiki tabs are migrated, but custom wikis are not. Consider exporting custom wiki content manually before migration.

What about archived Teams?

Archived Teams must be restored before migration. Unarchive the Team in the source tenant, migrate, then re-archive in the target tenant if needed.

Are external permissions migrated?

No, external user permissions are not migrated. External guests will need to be re-invited to the new tenant.

General Questions

Is there downtime during migration?

Cloudiway supports staged migration with minimal downtime. Pre-staging data before cutover reduces the final migration window significantly. Users can continue working during pre-staging.
