Overview

The pre-processing task prepares your target recipient before the actual migration begins. After running "Get Groups" to discover your source groups, you can update group settings and launch pre-processing to create the target objects in Office 365.

Pre-Processing Functions

  • 1. Creates the target recipient - Either a Shared Mailbox or Unified Group
  • 2. Migrates membership - Transfers owners and members to the target

Shared Mailbox Configuration

When selecting a Shared Mailbox as the target type, pre-processing executes the following actions:

📬 Mailbox Creation

  • Uses the "Target name" field as the mailbox name and alias
  • Email address is constructed from the alias and target connector domain

👥 Security Group

  • Creates a mail-enabled security group
  • Group names are prefixed with DL_

🔐 Membership & Access

  • Reads source group membership and adds members to the security group
  • Grants "Full Access" permissions to the security group on the Shared Mailbox

Shared Mailbox Best Practices

Shared Mailboxes are ideal for Google Groups that primarily function as collaborative inboxes where multiple users need to read and respond to emails.

Unified Group Configuration

For Unified Group (Microsoft 365 Group) targets, pre-processing completes these tasks:

👥 Group Creation

  • Applies the "Target name" as the group name and alias
  • Creates a full Microsoft 365 Group with shared inbox, calendar, and files

📧 Email Generation

  • Builds the email address using the alias and target connector domain

👤 Membership Migration

  • Reads source group membership
  • Adds members directly to the Unified Group

Unified Group Best Practices

Choose Unified Groups when you want full Microsoft 365 collaboration features including shared calendar, document library, and potential Microsoft Teams integration.

Completion Statuses

The pre-processing task concludes with one of the following statuses:

ERROR-PreProcessing

An issue occurred during pre-processing. Check the logs to troubleshoot.

Common causes: insufficient permissions, duplicate names, invalid characters

NOT STARTED

Pre-processing succeeded. You may now initiate migration for this group.

Target recipient is created and ready for content migration

Before Migration

Always verify the pre-processing status shows "NOT STARTED" before launching the actual content migration. Groups with "ERROR-PreProcessing" status need troubleshooting first.
